CBD for Dogs & Cats: Benefits for your Pets and How to Properly Dose

When it comes to your furry friend’s health, it’s important to keep on the cusp of natural remedy knowledge. A product with CBD for dogs or cats should be just as healthy and safe to be used on yourself. There should be no compromise when it comes to the quality of cannabidiol, just a difference in the dosage. Just like humans, your pet still needs relief from pain and general anxiety. Luckily, your furry mammal has an Endocannabinoid System not too dissimilar from your own. This means that CBD should affect them in similar ways that people experience natural wellbeing. As advancements arise in research for pets using cannabinoids, it becomes more commonplace for veterinarians to start recommending it. Everything you need to know about integrating CBD into your furry friend’s lifestyle is just a quick amount of scrolling away.

Why aren’t we hearing about it?

Many veterinarians shy away from recommending cannabidiol oil to pets because CBD is currently not FDA regulated. This is not to say that these products are not third party tested with lab COAs to prove it, just that the FDA is dragging its feet. Until the Food and Drug Administration provides recommended dosages and use, it can be hard to prescribe. In fact, while 61.5% of veterinarians were willing to discuss CBD with fellow colleagues, only 45.5% were comfortable with offering this solution to clients. This anonymous survey further detailed that it was younger professionals recently out of school that shied away from it.

Where certain organizations like the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) may not be ready to endorse cannabidiol yet, they seem hopeful of its use in the future. Despite some fears, there are still professionals willing to step forward about multiple cannabinoid use. A prime example is Dr. Stephanie McGrath, who has grown passionate about clinical studies and has performed two since 2016. Even with uncertainty from FDA approval, veterinarians are starting to come around to recommending CBD regardless because of their signs of working.

How much CBD oil should I give my dog?

The Food and Drug Administration can only do so much at a time, so official statements about CBD have not been made despite worldwide renown. There are many products across all sorts of industries that still have FDA disclosures about not being tested. Despite these dragging feet, studies have still been conducted with favorable results. Research through a grant from ElleVet Sciences showed that proper doses for dogs and cats proved safe with a high rate of acceptance. The only strange side effect was that cats tended to do more licking, but that is not uncommon feline behavior.

In case that doesn’t address all of your fears, another study funded by the Applied Basic Science Corporation analyzed how well the CBD was taken and how long it stayed in the blood stream. They found that the oral tincture was more favorable for effectiveness while exposure was directly proportional to dosage. This means that safe doses as recommended by your vet and based on breed should be perfectly fine for your loved one. Just so we’re clear, the FDA not evaluating something yet does not make it immediately unsafe.

Seeing signs

While government oversight has been slow moving to regulation, private research has been hard at work to prove the power of CBD for dogs and cats. A study performed by the Institute on Molecular Neuroscience, free of financial and commercial persuasion, discovered that cannabidiol was affective at calming susceptible populations from non-conditioned fears. This means that pets who haven’t been trained to be afraid of something are likely to be soothed from irrational anxieties and fears. Another study funded by ElleVet Sciences concluded that minimal doses administered twice a day worked to decrease pain in osteo-arthritic dogs and furthermore spur activity. Such joint discomfort often stops your pup right in their tracks, but cannabidiol may get them up and moving. CBD oil for dogs and cats may help heal both body and mind in ways we may still have yet to unlock. The possibilities and uses may still be endless.
